In 1938, downtown Asheville, NC, still resonated with the charm of horse-drawn carriages. It was during this quaint time that Stonewall Jackson opened the doors to Jackson Trading Co., a modest establishment nestled in a quiet brick building by the train tracks. Specializing in dry goods and clothing, Jackson Trading Co. quickly became a staple in the community.
As Stonewall’s two sons, Thomas and Julian Jackson, joined the business, the store transformed. The Jacksons expanded the offerings to include feed and seed, a top-notch leather repair shop, a harness-making shop, and an array of Western clothing that was pioneering for the region. Their vision and hard work laid the foundation for what would become a renowned name in the Western apparel industry.
In the early 1970s, the original brick building began to feel cramped. With a vision for growth and a bit of cowboy intuition, Thomas Jackson found a new piece of land on the west side of Asheville. In the spring of 1973, the family embarked on a new journey, building a larger facility that would accommodate their growing business. The expansion allowed Jackson Trading Co. to evolve from a small harness shop into a premier Western clothing store, reflecting the dedication of the third generation of Jacksons.
John Jackson, son of Julian, elevated the leather shop to national prominence with his custom, hand-made leather goods. Meanwhile, Charles Jackson, son of Thomas, made the saddle and tack business a sought-after destination across the Southeast. By the summer of 1993, the space at Jackson Trading Co. was once again outgrown, prompting another significant expansion. The store doubled in size to better serve its loyal customers.
